B & O Radio Receiver

In connection with the B&O elminator.

B & O 3 tube receiver is the result of a long time of work to produce a cheap and easily adjustable receiver that at the same time satisfies all the demands of the time for selectivity and strength.

Due to a special detector coupling and a new coil system in connection with encapsulation of the receiver's parts, an unprecedented selectivity and purity has been achieved.

The appliance is accompanied by a B & O. Eliminator, in an appliance which, when connected to an ordinary lighting network, supplies the necessary power and anode current to the receiver in full without an accumulator or anode battery.

The receiver consists of detector with resistor coupled anode rectification plus 2 stage low frequency amplification. The receiver covers with a switch the wavelength range 200 - 2599 meters.

As an example of the receiver's high sensitivity, it can be mentioned that 4 American stations were received by loudspeaker one night between at 2 and 3.

In the receiver are used absolutely First Class parts, belts and Torotor variable capacitors and Leowe constant resistors.

Mr Egnatoff was to later run the Triad Tube Company. Coby, Cepak and Egnatoff had formally manufactured electric lamps. Knowing nothing about Tube manufacturing, Ernest Kauer (a director of the Radio Protective Organization) was hired as chief engineer.

Kauer made excellent tubes and CeCo's reputation grew! In June 1928 Kauer bought out the three partners and changed the name to CeCo Manufacturing Company.

On April 3, 1929 CeCo gave up its lease of their space at 1190-1200 Eddy Street to Apco.

Their major product became vacuum tubes when they acquired a license to manufacture them in May 1929 from the Radio Corporation of America. 2

In 1929 CeCo named 3 new vice presidents. Here is what Talking Machine World & Radio-Music Merchant from the time has to say about the appointmets and the background of each gentleman:

N. 0. Williams, John E. Ferguson and E. T. Maharin,.Important Executives of CeCo Mfg. Co., Elected Officers

Three important executives of the CeCo Mfg. Co., Providence, R. I., maker of CeCo tubes, have been made vice-presidents of the com-pany. They are N. 0. Williams, chief engineer; John E. Ferguson, plant engineer, and Edward T. Maharin, sales director of the company.

Mr. Williams is internationally famous in technical circles of radio. For many years he was in complete charge of the tube division of the Westinghouse Lamp Co. Mr. Ferguson is accredited with being one of the leading pro-duction men in the tube industry. He per-sonally superintended the building of the main-moth CoCo plant in Providence. Mr. Maharin, a business man of wide experience, spends most of his time on the firing line. He travels in-cessantly. Known as a splendid organizer, he has created a sales organization which leaves him free to be away from his desk for long periods and most of his time lie spends in actual contact with his field men and the trade, aiding them in all possible ways. 11

By the middle of 1930, CeCo had produced 10 million tubes. This was at a rate of 4 million per year. Their plant was 3 1/2 acres and employed 1000 workers. 2

In 1930 CeCo started working on a new research equipment installation which took up an entire floor of the four-story building adjacent to the mammoth tube-production plant. The new installation cost $200,000. The research was described by President Ernest Kauer as follows: "We are going a step beyond any research hitherto followed by any radio enterprise which strictly limits its production activities to tube-manufacture," He went on to say: "We not only intend to develop new tube capabilities; we also will apply then. Until now, tube research has been satisfied to find new possibilities in tubes and then stop short, leaving their application in circuits to receiving-set engineers. This has cause a division of energy in reaching result. In our new research department, which will be completed before next Spring, we will not only conduct research for the improvement of tubes, but will also work out efficient circuits for their use." Although pointing to the possibility of CeCo switching their business model to one of producing receiving sets, Mr Kauer stated; "We simply want to aid in the most efficient use of radio tubes. There is too much lost motion, lost time, now spent between the newest tube development and its adaption in radio sets. We want to help overcome this. By developing circuits which will immediately use the product of our research department, radio progress will be aided greatly. Such plans will be turned over to the set manufacturers for the best use they can make of them." 8

Also in 1930, we find what seems to be a promotional ad for an indoor golf course located in the CeCo plant.

Also in 1932 CeCo came out with a line of premium tubes they named "Citation". These tubes may have been a last ditch effort for CeCo. The trade write ups on the tubes were dated mostly in February 1932, except one in April. I still have not found an Ad for the Citation. We know that they produced the tubes as they exist. How many were produced is unknown.

In 1932, CeCo announced an industrial devision to develop electrical and electronic devices. Their only known product was a mercury switch called the Mertact.

In 1932 Kauer sold CeCo to to Leonard Welling and Abraham Pletman, who ran Lafayette 2 , with the hope of moving the tube business to France. Since foreigners were not allowed to own French companies, the ownership was put under the name of their lawyer who immediately took over the company and booted Pletman and Welling. Pletman spent the next nine years in an asylum recovering from a mental breakdown. He eventually returned to his company (Lafayette) and successfully run it until his death in 1973. 2

That being said, there is a report in the October 19th, 1932 Brooklyn Daily Eagle saying Gold Seal bought CeCo, which was in receivership. Total worth of CeCo at the time was estimated in excess of $450,000. This included machinery, cartons and other packing material, as well as $28,000 due from RCA paid in rebateable royalties which could be utilizad by Gold Seal on its future manufacturing of radio tubes.5

CeCo Couriers

From September 17th, 1928 to June 30th, 1930, the CeCo Couriers had a radio show on the CBS Network, Mondays at 8:30pm. The show is listed in many of the CeCo ads. The referance for this information lists the sponsor as CeCo toothpaste but I believe that to be wrong as I can't find any information on that company.

This tube is owned by John Walker. Here is his discription of the tube:
The special base doesn t appear to be an afterthought. The adhesive/dust
between bulb and base look old . There are 4 wires coming out to the 4
binding posts. The binding posts are labeled B-, B+, C-, C+. There are wires
coming out between the base and bulb for all 4 binding posts. Filament pins
have no connection to the binding posts. Grid pin also connects to the C+
binding post and the plate pin also connects to the B- binding post. There is a
wire to the C-, B+ posts but no clue where they go. I can see into the tube a bit
on one side and can see that it is a normal triode with 4 leads going through the press.

CeCo Citation Tube Line

In 1932 CeCo announced a line of superior tubes that cost more than your average tube. Their price was $4.00 each while RCA and Champion were cutting prices.

President of CeCo, Ernest Kauer stated
"Since profit is the goal of all business the CeCO Citation carries a list price that guarantees s satisfactory profit to retailers. It is now apparent that both retailers and manufacturers of radio tubes have been misled by the glamor for lower prices. Since this stampeded action has not demonstrated any corresponding increased volume in sales dealer shave been left high and dry with reduced volume and reduced prices". CeCo made their Citation tubes with an amber bulb. This was to distinguish them from other makes and to help the displaying of the product.

Some of the slogans used in the promotion of the Citation line were:

Only recognized Master Workmen with skill and experience are employed

"You pays your money and you takes your choice"

CITATION is a precision built radio tube the result of diligent study upon the part of CeCo engineers. It represents a high degree of Quality and Uniformity of Characteristics not obtainable heretofore. In order to insure closer accuracy more precision high grade materials

CITATIONS are manufactured in a separate department in the CeCo factory. Only recognized Master Workmen with skill and experience are employed. No equipment, effort or time is spared that could add to the precision of CITATIONS.
